This GastroGear Portable Induction Cooktop Burner offers an excellent opportunity to try induction cooking. The main requirement for such cooking is cookware a magnet will stick to which eliminates a lot of already existing cookware. However, one can purchase an induction cookware adapter (sold here at Amazon). This adapter allows one to use already owned cookware such as glass.Since I have a gas stove in a closed space I wondered how induction would work instead of always using the gas stove. Well, so far so good. The burner does not take up an inordinate amount of space on the counter. The top of the burner is large enough to hold a large soup pot, large fry pan or wok. The controls are easy to understand and to use.The child lock is good for families though I will not need that option. It comes with an 18 hour timer which I have not needed yet or the automatic shut down since I stand over my cooking LOL!!! The burner looks nice and arrives well packed. The cord is heavy duty and three-pronged. This is a nice burner which works great now but should I encounter a problem too early on I will update. Great item for the price.
NOTE: There are some things that an induction stove will not work with; you may have some pans that if you tried to use them, they would not heat up. Glass, copper, ceramic, and aluminum will just sit there and not cook anything on this stove. I guess you can tell if it will work by if a magnet will stick to the pan, it will work on an induction stove.I'd never heard of induction stoves until we moved into our current house and that's what was here. I LOVE them! Then a few years later it broke. We got another stove, but not induction, and I was sad. Until this little ray of sunshine came into my life. One thing I love about it has nothing to do with cooking. When I first opened the box I was greeted with a "HI" on the burner, which actually wasn't greeting me, it just means HI as in temperature I am guessing. What I love about it is that if you look closely at the pictures/video on the product page you'll see that they printed it upside down, so as you are cooking it will say "IH" to you =)UPDATE: It is entirely possible that IH is not an upside-down HI, but that it stands for Induction Heating... my bad.I actually got this for my daughter because she was moving into a studio without a kitchen (since the "kitchen" consisted of a slightly larger sink and a burner plate). This was meant to give her a kitchen =) But then she moved again so didn't need it! Which made me happy because we were going to store it for camping and what not, but I like induction so much more than regular stoves that I have this off to the side for me to use (or anyone else who wants to).I like the child safety lock, which renders the other buttons useless. You press for 3 seconds to turn it on, and repeat to turn it off. You can adjust it between 200W and 1800W, or switch the display and adjust between 176 and 464 degrees Fahrenheit. It's a lot bigger than I imagined, and the housing doesn't feel super strong but it can apparently hold 70 pounds. That's a lot of chili! Our stainless steel housing came with scratches and smudges already on it. I'm not sure what the smudges were because I had to scrub them off with a wet rag. but it worked. It's over 1 foot wide and deep and over 4" high. It feels more like a mini stove than just a hot plate. The price seems pretty good for an induction stove, especially for the versatility this one gives, and if the coupon is still available on the product page!Thank you for reading, I hope it was helpful.
What drew me to try this was the safety features with the auto shut off, It ended up working perfectly and I feel a lot better using it with. my small children around. Heat was perfect and evenly distributed which makes cooking so much easier. Price efficient and worth the buy.
