You don't have to use the app though and can easily switch between modes by pressing a button on the unit. It has rhythmic settings at different speeds and a couple more irregular settings. The rotation was something that I wasn't used to but it does create good suction and overall stimulation. The sleeve is reasonably soft but doesn't feel like it will easily degrade or fall apart.The one thing other reviewers noted is that it doesn't have great depth, but I suppose that's a trade off for the compact size.
